‘Golap Kha Shishu Shodon’ is an orphanage in Nageswari, Kurigram, one of the most poverty- stricken and underdeveloped places in Bangladesh. It was initiated and still being operated by Mr. Rabiul Islam Khan and his wife Most. Bilkis Banu, a great-hearted couple who pledged themselves to help the children in need.
It all started in the winter of 1999 when one day, Mr. Khan went to his shop as usual in the morning and found an abandoned newborn baby crying in front of his shop. He rushed to her and took her to his wife, and she took care of her and raised her from that day onwards. They named her Pritilota after the venturous Indian revolutionary nationalist Pritilota Waddedar. Being greatly moved by this event, they established a non-profitable organization named Golap Kha Shishu Shodon; on their private land in 2009. It consists of a residential area for the children and staffs, a primary school, a high school and a playground.
There are currently 74 children in the orphanage and 306 more non-residential children study in the schools free of cost. The monthly operating expense of the orphanage is very high. The organization is operated completely from Mr. and Mrs. Khan's personal income which in this time of crisis, has become impossible to manage. গল্পটা শুরু প্রীতিলতাকে দিয়ে। ১৯৯৯ সালে দোকানে যাবার পথে জনাব রবিউল ইসলাম রাস্তায় একটি মেয়ে শিশুর কান্না শুনতে পান এবং দ্রুত তাকে তার স্ত্রী বিলকিস বানুর কাছে নিয়ে যান। সেই থেকে মেয়েটি তাদের যত্নে বড় হচ্ছে। উনারা আদর করে নাম রেখেছেন- প্রীতিলতা। এই ঘটনা রবিউল এবং বিলকিস দম্পতিকে অনুপ্রাণিত করে সমাজের আরও অসহায় শিশুর বিকাশে হাত বাড়িয়ে দেয়ার জন্য। তাই ২০০৯ সালে কুড়িগ্রাম নাগেশ্বরীতে নিজ জায়গায় উনারা প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন ‘গোলাপ খাঁ শিশু সদন’। শুরুটা হয়েছিল ১৩ জন বাচ্চাকে দিয়ে যেখানে এখন আছে ৭৪ জন, যাদের মাঝে ৫০ জন ছেলে, ২৪ জন মেয়ে। অসহায় শিশুদের শিক্ষার কথা চিন্তা করে উনি ২০১২ সালে একটি প্রাইমারি এবং ২০১৪ সালে একটি সেকেন্ডারি স্কুল প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। বর্তমানে ৩০৬ জন ছাত্রছাত্রী বিনে পয়সায় স্কুলগুলোতে পড়াশোনা করছে। রয়েছে ২০ জন শিক্ষক ও আট জন স্টাফ।
এই বিশাল কর্মযজ্ঞের পেছনে রয়েছে বড় খরচ, যার প্রায় পুরোটাই আসে এই দম্পতির নিজস্ব আয় দিয়ে। করোনা মহামারী এবং রাশিয়া-ইউক্রেন যুদ্ধের পরে সৃষ্ট মুল্যস্ফীতি, সব মিলিয়ে বর্তমান এই দম্পতি খুবই কঠিন সময় পার করছেন এই প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলো চালাতে। অর্থের অভাবে বাচ্চাদের প্রয়োজনমত যত্ন নেয়া কঠিন হয়ে পড়েছে। তাই এই দম্পতির অসাধারণ কাজকে চলমান রাখার জন্য আপনাদেরকে এগিয়ে আসার জন্য অনুরোধ জানাচ্ছি। আপনার ক্ষুদ্র সাহায্য একটি বাচ্চার ভবিষ্যৎ নির্মাণে অমূল্য ভূমিকা রাখবে।
