Fundraising for Rifatul’s Nuclear Therapy Treatment
Rifatul Islam Bhuiyan (Rifat), a final-year professional exam candidate at Mainamoti Medical College (session 2017-18), Comilla, has been fighting Ewing Sarcoma (a rare type of bone cancer) for the last one and a half years. Before he was properly diagnosed with this deadly cancer, he had been treated for pain since 2020 and went through PLID (Prolapse Lumbar Intervertebral Disc) surgery as a result of a misdiagnosis. Due to deterioration of his health and unbearable pain throughout his whole body, he went to Apollo Cancer Centre, Teynampet, Chennai, India in 2023 to perform bone marrow and soft tissue biopsy. Finally, he was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma with bone metastasis.
Since then, he has undergone 18 cycles of high-dose VEC/IE chemotherapy and 13 sessions of radiotherapy. However, after completing chemotherapy, he was still experiencing unbearable, life-threatening pain. The doctors at Apollo Cancer Center, India, suggested that there might be one option left - nuclear therapy combined with chemotherapy. According to the oncologists, Rifat’s body is able to tolerate a maximum of six nuclear therapy sessions. The cost for a single therapy session alone is 450,000 INR (5,400 USD), totaling 2,700,000 INR (32,400 USD) for six nuclear therapy sessions which excludes expenses for other tests and accommodations plus food.
Rifat lost his father to cancer when he was eight years old. His mother, Mrs. Nazma Akter, has raised him and his younger sister with great difficulty. She had to sell all of her property trying to save her eldest son, Rifat. She, along with Rifat’s newly wedded wife, Tasnia Jahan, also raised funds from various non-profit groups, including Ankur, to support the costs of chemotherapy last year. They have nothing left to bear such an enormous cost for nuclear therapy. Rifat is a kind hearted, cheerful, young person who cares a lot for others! Even during his very difficult time, he hasn’t lost his smile and humor! This will be a great loss for the society if we cannot save Rifat. Therefore, on behalf of Rifat’s family and friends, we urge you to please come forward and help raise funds for Rifat’s nuclear therapy treatment which is the last option he has left! Thank you!
